Style Inspiration: Elizabeth Edwards

Elizabeth Edwards was a wife, mother of four, best-selling author, activist, and lawyer.  I have always admired her because despite her personal struggles which included her son dying tragically at age 16, her fight with terminal cancer, and her husband's infidelity and fathering an illegitimate child, she managed to deal with all of this with amazing style and grace. Elizabeth Edwards will always be an  inspiration to me because she lived her life with courage, grace, strength, and dignity.

She simply had style.

Elizabeth Edwards posted this to her Facebook page on Monday

"You all know that I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces – my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope. These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that. And, yes, there are certainly times when we aren't able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It's called being human. But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful. It isn't possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel to everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day. To you I simply say: you know."

With the passing of Elizabeth Edwards, America has lost a symbol of strength, hope, and humanity, a tireless advocate for health care for all Americans, and determined crusader for cancer cures," former President Bill Clinton tells UsMagazine.com in a statement. "Her children have lost a loving mother, her friends a wise counselor. My prayers are with them. She was a remarkable woman who dealt with the challenges her life dealt her with courage and grace."

"Many others would have turned inward; many others in the face of such adversity would have given up. But through all that she endured, Elizabeth revealed a kind of fortitude and grace that will long remain a source of inspiration," President Barack Obama said in a statement Tuesday.

Reader Request: Creating an Evening Look With a Black Skirt

I received a request from a style'n reader who asked me to help her style an outfit using this skirt from Anthropologie.  She also wants to pair the skirt with black sparkly tights.

For a glamorous evening look I recommend pairing the skirt with blouses that are satin or silk.  Also tops with billowy sleeves and ruffles are other ways to dress up the skirt.  Even incorporating sequins,  florals, animal prints, lace, and crochet would work well.

And since we are on the topic of skirts, I think having at least one basic yet high quality black skirt is a wardrobe essential. It is versatile and can be styled so many ways.  A black skirt can be worn with a button down shirt for work, casual T-shirts and flats on the weekends, and a blouse and heels in the evening.

Here are a few blouses that would work well with this skirt.

Gap gathered top $59.50 and leopard cami $49.50

My husband and I went out to dinner Saturday night with some friends so I thought it would be fun to style a black skirt with some sparkly gold tights. Even though this skirt is different from the Anthropologie skirt,  I think both skirts can be styled with similar types of blouses, shoes, and accessories.   I decided to add a flowy black blouse to give the outfit a monochromatic look and I added color with the necklace, clutch, and shoes. Here's a couple of quick pictures we took before heading out to dinner.

Fashion at the Museum of Fine Arts

On Friday evening my friend Phoebe and I attended the Ready to Wear Spring/Summer 2011 Trend Overview at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.  It was an event hosted by Fashion Group International of Boston and also included a panel of local bloggers including my friend Sami of a glimpse of glamour.  Other panel members I met were Liana Elyse (New Brahmin), Cassie Knight  (My Secret Boston) and Amanda Antunes. (d.aMa design)  I also met the lovely Amanda Dugay Forester with red bird vintage.

The presentation was informative and interesting. But the best part of attending events like this one is the opportunity to network and meet other fashion bloggers and designers in the Boston area.

Have you had the opportunity to meet other bloggers in your city?

Phoebe is style'n in a BCBG black knit top, Urban Outfitters striped jacket, Madewell jeans and necklace, and Ann Taylor black heels.
I am wearing an H&M dress, BCBG leather jacket, Michael Kors belt,  Spanx reversible tights brown/black (LOVE these!), and Aldo heels.
Phoebe, Liana, and Sami
These ladies look so stylish in their winter outerwear. (Liana was wearing a gorgeous cape and I wish I got a better picture of it now!)

Ok I realize it is winter and it's starting to get cold and we are absorbed with winter fashion at the moment. But I have to admit it is a nice to see all the upcoming trends for the Spring and Summer.  Stay tuned as I compile some of the most popular trends and looks for the upcoming 2011 Spring/Summer season.

It is no secret that Alexa Chung has amazing casual chic style and has even been called Fashion's latest "It" Girl.  Alexa has designed pieces for Madewell and the luxe British handbag company Mulberry has named a $1,150 buffalo-leather bag after her.  This 27 year model, fashion designer, and TV personality in Britain, will now be taking her casual and chic style to PBS to host a US TV show called "Thrift in America." This show is set to air next summer and Alexa will take consumers into thrift stores, consignment stores, and garage sales to find good deals and treasures.

If you are interested in reading more about Alexa Chung and her new TV adventure check out this recent article on Alexa Chung in the NY Times.  In this article Alexa discusses her style and inspiration and says "all of my beauty icons are men" and "it's all about effortlessness. It's all about looking undone."
