Boston Fashion Week Update and Swap

Boston Fashion Week is taking place this week and there are so many fun events to attend.  Last night I attended the Barneys Fashion Show at the Copley Catwalk and the debut of the Emily Muller collection at Looc Boutique.  Here are a few pictures from the Barney's Fashion Show.  (I will post some pictures of Emily's amazing collection later this week.)

There were so many great trends and looks for the fall featured during the show including sequins, off the shoulder dresses, leopard prints, feathered fringe, over the knee boots, cozy knits, and the color red just to name a few. And check out the hairstyles!

What is your favorite look or trend featured here?

{Enjoying a cosmopolitan with Menaka and Nitu}
Ok so for you lovely ladies who missed the Barney's Fashion show you might be able to attend the Neiman Marcus Fashion show tonight.  Here is the information.

Thursday, September 30 at 6pm
Copley Catwalk – Neiman Marcus Fashion Show
and Boston Common Cocktail Party
Copley Place - Center Court
100 Huntington Avenue, Boston MA
Please write 'Neiman Marcus' in subject line.
Or call  617.266.3804. Space is limited.

This evening I am looking forward to attending the Swapaholics' Boston Fashion Week Sip and Swap with some friends.  It will be great to meet other stylish Bostonians and I can't wait to see what goodies I get. So the way it works is you bring a bag of clothes, jewelry, and accessories and then swap it for pieces from other fashionista's.  Then you can sip on wine and enjoy the runway show featuring outfits created from the swap.

On Tuesday I  was telling my friend Phoebe I have no idea what to put in this bag.  But last night I walked into my closet and it took me all of 5 minutes to fill up a bag of clothes, shoes, and jewelry for the event.  This is such a great excuse to get rid of items I have not worn recently (you know so I have space to add a few more fall items in my closet).

Going bananas and going Barneys

Over the weekend I skimmed through my Cooking Light magazine and the cover recipe was peanut butter banana bread. Also featured in the magazine were banana-chocolate walnut bread, bananas foster bread, and basic banana bread.  Reading about these delicious recipes and seeing the gorgeous pictures inspired me to make my mom's banana bread recipe.  And even though I love my mom's recipe, next time I might try the basic banana bread recipe because it looks a wee bit healthier.

{Mom's banana bread }
Recipe
3 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
3 eggs beaten
1/2 cup applesauce
1 8 oz can of crushed pineapple
2 cups sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup chopped nuts
1 cup vegetable oil
2 cups mashed ripe bananas
2 tsp vanilla
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, grease and flour 2 (9 x 5 ) loaf pans.
2. In a large bowl combine flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Stir in nuts and set aside.
3. In another bowl, combine eggs, oil, applesauce, bananas, pineapple with juice, and vanilla.
4. Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients stirring just until moistened
5. Spoon batter in pans.
6. Bake for 60 minutes or until done.
7. Remove pans from oven and cool 10 min before removing loaves from pans.
8. Put loaves on wire racks and cool completely.
-Freezes well and is easy to make
-I also substituted chocolate chips for the nuts because Ariyana has a nut allergy

On another note it is Boston Fashion Week  and there are so many fun events taking place. Last week I had the opportunity to participate in Fashion Now and tonight there are a couple of fun events at Barneys and a local boutique called Looc.  Considering I spent much of my weekend attending kids birthday parties and eating too much pizza and cake, this will be a nice change of pace.  If you live in the area definitely check out the schedule of events.

Lady in Red

Several of the 2010 Fall RTW collections featured the color red. Red is such a bold, confident, and fun color to wear.

{Bottega Veneta}
{Givenchy}
{Valentino}
Here are a few of my favorite red items for the fall. (I have had my eye on this Madewell dress for a while now. )

I found this red and white BCBG blouse in the back of my closet and it seriously has to be at least 3 or  4 years old.   To create an updated look,  I added a wide black belt.  By the way is anyone else out there as crazy about wearing belts as I am? I feel like I wear belts all the time.  Anyway, I wore this comfortable outfit on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Boston.

{BCBG blouse, Citizens of Humanity Avedon slick skinny legging jeans, H&M belt, Tory Burch flats, Michael Kors sunglasses}
And here is an article from the online edition of Saturday's WSJ titled : "Red is the Color of Confidence"

Do you like wearing red?

Style Trend: Over the Knee Boots

{image}
I love my Stuart Weitzman 50/50 black over the knee flat boots I purchased last fall/winter. They were by far my best purchase of the season.  I wore them with skinny pants and slim fitting trousers, leggings, skirts and dresses.

Now I am on the search for  tall brown boots and I really like these ones.

1. Frye shirley $447.95
2. Via Spaga georgia $298
3. Tory Burch jack $550
4. Michael Kors bromley  $197.90 on sale

Over the knee boots can be intimidating but done right they create a stylish and chic look.

style'n tips on wearing over the knee boots:

1. If you wear these boots with short skirts the best length is 1-3 inches above the top of the boots.

2. For skirts and dresses, match up your leggings or tights to the boot to create an elongated look with out breaking up the colors.  Unless you are trying to copy Julia Roberts in Pretty women, avoid tight skirts and bright colored leggings.

3. Ok but if you do wear your boots with a tight skirt then go for a tailored look. Add a well cut shirt,  a mid thigh length tailored coat, and an oversized bag.

4. One of my favorite looks is to pair up over the knee boots with leggings and long tunics

5. Beware they do not look good with loose fitting pants, flared pants, boot cut, and boyfriend jeans. They do look amazing with skinny jeans.

6. Taller women can get away with these but if you are shorter and have the confidence you can still wear them.  And the tall flat boots will be more flattering and classy than the stiletto over the knee boots.

7. And stiletto vs. flat? I think flat is better and more practical. Definitely not as edgy and provocative as the stiletto but you get more of an equestrian and casual look.

8. It is best to avoid shiny materials, patent, and too many details like lace and studs.

What do you think about wearing over the knee boots? What outfits do you wear them with?

White wouldn't you?

Well it is officially fall (even though it is going to be a hot and sunny day in Boston today) so the question today is would you wear white after Labor Day?  My friend Aleena and I were discussing this issue and I said I typically do not wear white jeans, cropped pants, or linen pants in the fall/winter.  Although, I continue to wear white blouses and cardigans and I still carry my winter white handbags in the fall and winter.   However, after seeing some of these great 2010 fall looks featuring white and ivory pants by Thakoon Panichgul, Gucci, Jill Stewart, Reed Krakoff, and Isabel Marant I would definitely reconsider.  I love the looks so much that I think having a pair of white pants is now a fall/winter wardrobe essential!

What are your thoughts on wearing white pants in the fall and winter?

Fashion Now

This past Saturday I had the wonderful opportunity to be one of 4 judges in a "Model for the Day" contest.  This was an open casting call where the lucky chosen model will have the opportunity to walk the real runway with professional models during the Simon Fashion Show Now on October 1st at 7pm.

Other judges included Tim Ayers, Agency Director with Model Club Inc, Corinne Demadis, Booking Agent with Model Club Inc, and Candy O'Terry, Magic 106.7's on air personality.

For this event I wore a reversible Built by Wendy dress from Flock.  Flock is definitely becoming one of my favorite boutiques in Boston and Dani, one of the store owners is so stylish, knowledgeable, and helpful.
Built by Wendy Bauhaus side tie reversible dress,  Anthropologie belt (seen here), Ann Taylor booties (seen here), and earrings and bangle gifted from my lovely aunt Anjana and cousin Poonam from London
This is what the dress looks like without the belt. (sorry but the belt caused a few wrinkles) Next time I might turn the dress inside out and wear it as a navy dress. I think adding a pair of brown flat boots would create a really nice relaxed and casual look.

 Here is more information on the fashion events for those of you who live in the area.

Animal Prints and Bollywood

Today is my mom's 60th birthday! I think she is style'n in her animal print sari.

{Mom-Happy Birthday from all us gals!}
 Since I can remember my mom has had a weakness for stylish handbags and shoes.  ( It is a good thing we have the same shoe size)  Birthday's are always a great excuse to add a new handbag to the collection and here is my mom's latest addition.  (I will definitely be borrowing this bag from her)

Tory Burch deep clay norah satchel

light brown snake print wallet

My mom also adores anything Bollywood so I thought I would share her playlist today. These are some of her favorite songs right now and they are perfect for the gym or a nice long run outside.   Now you really don't have an excuse to skip your workout today!
