One Year of Style

{Photo Credit- Kelly at Style Attic}
Today marks the one year anniversary of style'n! Thank you for following along and for your comments and support this past year. I can honestly say that I have grown more in the past year than I have in the past few years and it's all because this blog has allowed me to express my creativity and with this has come some amazing opportunities as well as some wonderful new friendships and partnerships.

And I am so excited to let you know that VERY soon (just a matter of days) I will share with you the new and improved website for style'n.

So here is my very first post from May 25th, 2010.   I don't think anyone read it but to me it is the single most important post because it captured the reasons I started blogging and it marked the beginning of this wonderful journey.

Welcome to style'n-May 25th 2010
Since the New Year, I decided I want to start being more creative so I figured why not start a blog? A virtual journal is an amazing way to capture all the things going on in my everyday life but also a great way to connect to others. I love all things associated with style and I am hoping this blog will be an outlet for me to share my personal style and all the things I love most. so here goes.....

Spring Fling

On Saturday Aneesh and I attended the annual Spring Fling cocktail party with his colleagues at the Boston Fairmont Copley Hotel.  I ended up wearing the same dress I wore a couple of weeks ago to another cocktail party, but I created a new look by adding different jewelry and a bright colored clutch.  And for a change I also experimented with my eye make up and went for a more dramatic look with Revlon's ColorStay eye shadow in sultry smoke.

Where Did Our SUNday Go?

On Sunday we took Ariyana to a birthday party and the rain stayed away just long enough for the kids to run around the yard for about an hour.  The rest of the day was gloomy and rainy and unfortunately it has been like this in Boston all week long. I really hope the sun comes back this Sunday.

Day to Night

Friday was a great day.  I work up early, had a couple of great meetings for work, and then Aneesh joined me for lunch and we worked at a coffee shop for much of the afternoon.  We took advantage of the beautiful day with an evening game of tennis and then took Ariyana with us to dinner at Gaslight.  It was a nice balance of work, exercise, family time, and of course fabulous food and wine.

And I love it when I can transition and outfit from day to night.  During the day for work I wore this blouse and pants with a black blazer and for dinner I just swapped out the blazer and work bag for this jacket and a small clutch.  Oh and these pants are exact same ones I bought in pink and wore here.  Did I mention I have a problem with buying the same item of clothing in multiple colors?

Reader Request: Shades of Lip Gloss

I have had a few readers ask me about the makeup I use so I thought I would start by sharing a few of my favorite lip glosses.  When it comes to makeup I believe less is more. I don't buy a lot of makeup because makeup does not have a long shelf life and I end up using my favorite products over and over again anyway. Also I don't have that many lipsticks because I prefer to wear neutral colored lip glosses most of the time.  But having said that, I am interested in experimenting more with lipstick colors and would love to know if you have any favorite shades of lipstick.

Neutral Ground

Zara blouse and pants-, Jimmy Choo platform heels, La Mer chain/wrap watch,
Oscar De La Renta belt, bangles-London, clutch-India (also seen here)
On Sunday my sister and her fiance treated Aneesh, Ariyana, and me to a wonderful dinner over at Strega on the waterfront.  For dinner I wore these pink pants and a white silk blouse and for the past few weeks these have been my "go to" pants. The pants are comfortable, fun, and a welcome change from all the dark pants hanging in my closet. They are great too because I can dress them up with heels or wear them with flats for a more casual look.  And while I love all the bright colors for the spring I am equally drawn to these softer neutral tones.  I know my mom will like this outfit because for a change I am not wearing black.

Have you bought a pair of colored pants for the spring/summer?

Spring 2011 Trend: Top 5 Must Have Shoe Styles

{via}
In case you missed my guest post over at the CoolKids blog yesterday, here is my list of the Top 5 must have shoe styles for the spring/summer.  Now that the weather is warming up, it is the perfect time to evaluate your shoe collection, discard shoes you are no longer wearing, and make space for new and fun shoe styles for the warmer months.

1. wood platforms
These chunky shoes are sexy, retro and pair perfectly with the spring 70's trend, neutrals, and florals. They look great with wide-leg jeans, short skirts and dresses.
Coach grand heel
2. cork wedges
Any style of wedges add height which is flattering and best of all they are super comfortable. You can pair these with shorts and short and flowy dresses and skirts.

3. platform pumps
These heels are sexy and make your legs look a mile long!  They look great with wide leg jeans pencil skirts, and mini skirts.  They are great in a variety of colors but my personal preference is a perfect neutral or nude pair for the spring/summer.

4. pointy-toe slingbacks
Kitten heels, pointy flats and slingback are all back on trend for the spring. They look great with flowy skirts, skinny jeans, and fitted dresses. This style of shoe is definitely my favorite for work. They look professional but since the heel is low you can still walk in them.

5. flat espadrilles
Instead of ballet flats why not try flat espadrilles for a preppy and casual weekend look? They look great with shorts, cropped pants, and boyfriend jeans.

Shoe La La

On Friday Aneesh surprised me for my birthday (which is today) with dinner and an evening getaway. We headed to the Liberty Hotel for the night and enjoyed a great meal at Scampo, one of the restaurants in the hotel.  It was a lovely and relaxing evening and I thought it was so thoughtful and sweet of Aneesh to plan a fun night out for my birthday. I wore a dress I recently picked up at the Tahari outlet with these black platform sandals.

I am also guest posting over at the CoolKids blog today on my Top 5 Must Have Shoe Styles For The Spring. I hope you will head over to my friend Betsy's blog and check out my list of the hottest shoe styles for the spring and how to wear them.

And I have to explain the inspiration behind the title of this post. Aneesh and I have been reading the most adorable book to Ariyana called Shoe-la-la.  This sweet rhyming story is about four little girls in search of the perfect shoes, and in the end they realize the best pair of shoes they can find are the ones they make and decorate themselves.  The illustrations are colorful and what I love most about this book is that it sends positive messages to young children about individuality, friendship, and creativity.

Reader Request: A few questions....

Update-Voting is now closed. Thanks to all of you who voted. I truly appreciate all your multiple votes and enthusiasm the past few weeks. And a special thanks to Kristin over at Bon Bon Rose Girls for her support as well.

First and foremost a big thank you to all of you who have been voting for me over at circle of moms. Right now I am in the Top 25 for Moms with Style but that could all change quickly because today is the last day of voting and the competition for the Top 25 spots is getting really competitive.

Being in the Top 25 would not only be a great Mother's Day and birthday gift but I also started my blog one year ago in May and earning a spot in the Top 25 would be such an amazing milestone and accomplishment. Also my friends Kristin and Megan over at Bon Bon Rose Girls need your votes too. Please vote for me HERE and Kristin and Megan HERE.  And please help spread the word on Twitter and Facebook if you can.

Kacie and her sister, both Style'N readers,  emailed me requesting some additional details on a few of my previous blog posts.  I thought I would take the opportunity to address their questions on today's post.

1. Could you provide the link to the peach mango mimosa's and spinach and mushroom quiche recipes you talked about on April13th?

I am planning on doing a recipe post on the spinach, mushroom, and onion quiche sometime in May or June so stay tuned. But I can tell you it's my aunt's recipe and it's super easy to make and it's delicious. In the meantime if you want the recipe feel free to email me directly and I would be happy to send it to you.
And the peach mango mimosa's are really easy to make. I just added this peach mango juice to some champagne...that's it! Oh threw in a raspberry in each glass to make the drinks look pretty.

2. Which food mixer do you have - it is photographed in your Valentines Cookies blog piece from Feb 7th.

I use this Kitchen Aid Architect 6 speed hand mixer but I have been baking way more this past year and I would love to get a professional stand up mixer soon.

3. Where are the beautiful glasses from that you serve your smoothies in - the tall and the smaller ones?

The smaller cocktail glasses are from Crate and Barrel. I got them a couple of years ago and unfortunately I don't see them on the Crate and Barrel website. I got the taller etched glasses more recently and they are from West Elm. I bought the tall tumblers and the wine glasses. And I use these wine glasses for yogurt parfaits and desserts.

4. We were curious to know which the orange cook book you had was was - its in the photo where you have the Gpaltrow, Flour and Giada's cookbooks in a pile from April 7.

The cookbook is Vij's Indian Cuisine and it's available at Amazon. Vij's restaurant is an extremely well known and popular restaurant in Vancouver and we always eat there when we are in town.  My husband and I both really enjoy making recipes from this cookbook.

5. Where is your ring from in the photograph of you holding your daughters hand, December 17 2010

It is a David Yurman albion ring and Aneesh got it for me as a gift when Ariyana was born 3 years ago.

Movie Review: Something Borrowed

On Monday night a friend and I attended the advance screening of the movie Something Borrowed starring Kate Hudson, Ginnifer Goodwin, John Krasinski and Colin Egglesfield.  This romantic comedy, based on the best selling novel by Emily Giffin, is about two best friends who want to marry the same man.

Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) is an unhappy, single, talented attorney who drinks too much on her 30th birthday and wakes up to find herself in bed with Dex (Colin Egglesfield), the man who she has had a crush on since law school.  But Dex happens to be her best friend Darcy's (Kate Hudson) fiancĂ©.  Relationships are tested while a long-time trusted friend, Ethan (John Krasinski), stands by Rachel with a secret of his own.

Even though I ended up sitting up front in the third row and left with a stiff neck I will try not to be bias in my review. Basically this romantic comedy is slightly predictable, runs a bit long, and in my opinion is not a "must see" movie. There are definitely funny moments and for the most part I enjoyed watching Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson on screen. But I would recommend forgoing the $10 movie theater ticket and perhaps consider renting this movie on a Friday night when you're in the mood to curl up on the couch and watch a chick flick with your girlfriends.  Oh and I wouldn't subject your husbands and boyfriends to this movie unless of course you are intentionally trying to ruin your relationship! The movie opens up nationwide on Friday May 6th.

Have you read the book? Are you planning to catch this movie in the theaters?

By far the best scene in the movie is when Kate and Ginnifer break it down to Salt n'Pepa's Push It.

And a BIG thank you for your continued votes at Circle of Moms.  I cannot thank you enough for all your support and votes.  Please vote HERE today and tomorrow and help me stay in the Top 25!!!

Prints Charming

On Sunday we went over to our friends house for a casual brunch and to celebrate the arrival their new baby.  Even though I feel like my to do list keeps getting longer, it was nice to ignore this list and just spend a lazy Sunday afternoon drinking champagne and catching up with good friends.  And can you believe it's already May? It was a gorgeous sunny day in Boston yesterday so I thought it would be a great excuse to get dressed up and put on my new printed spring dress.  Unfortunately, it was not warm enough to forgo the tights quite yet.

Ariyana is wearing a Gap tiny flower tank dress, Ralph Lauren cardigan and See Kai Run shoes
Thakoon for Target dress, Burberry sunglasses, Madewell oxford slingbacks, Michael Kors watch, turquoise bracelet, and dark purple swarovski crystal bracelet

Don't forget to enter the Etsy jewelry giveaway going on now until midnight tonight.
